Things Your Kids Will Only Say in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one of my favorite European cites for it's unique layout with streets crisscrossing canals and the eponymous Amstel river. As one of the transit hub cities between Seattle and Europe we've visited Amsterdam with kids frequently in short 1-2 day stops on our way to or from visiting family in the British Isles.
Schiphol, Amsterdam's international airport, is one of the main reasons why I enjoy such brief visits to Amsterdam with my children. The airport is situated a brief 20-minute train ride from the city center. This means that even if you are only on the ground in ...
Evening in Paros
After I wrote my post about traveling to Greece in 2012 earlier this week, I realized that I really don't have very many pictures of Paros, my favorite corner of Greece on this blog. So here you go: eye candy for you. Hopefully these images will give you a sense of why I love the place so much.

Chu Chi Tunnels Saigon Vietnam
BigB climbing into the Chu Chi Tunnels outside Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. These tunnels were a vital part of the Viet Cong's strategy during the Vietnam War.
And just about disappearing into the tunnel.
Inside the tunnels showing how small these spaces are - even for a 10-year-old boy who stands at about 5' tall.

Beach Cafe Kizkalesi Turkey
Towards the end of our year-long trip, our kids were becoming very road-weary. Even though our original goal had been to follow the Silk Road from Xi'an to Istanbul within a day of crossing into Turkey I knew they were just spent. We could have taken an overnight bus from Diyarbakir to Istanbul, done a three-day mad dash around the bazaars, mosques and museums and detoured at Ephesus for a been-there-done-that stop but it didn't seem fair - or worthwhile. Instead we ambled our way along the Turkish Mediterranean coast stopping at beach resorts along the way. It was marvelous ...
Albufeira Adventure Park
While in Portugal with our kids this past summer we had plenty of sun days and pool days and even a couple of beach days but we got to the point where we were all done with lazing in the sun. So what did we do instead? We went zip-lining at the very fun Algarve Adventure Park in Albufeira. This turned out to be an excellent choice for our group of kids ranging in age from five to 15.
After the friendly and helpful French instructors kitted us out with harnesses and gave us necessary safety instructions we were off - ...

Sydney is a truly enjoyable place to visit. From the sweeping views of the famous harbor with the iconic Opera House on show to the many great restaurants and a long list of fun family activities including – my favorite – varied and excellent beaches, there is something for everyone in your family.
Sleeping
We rented a pretty two-bedroom apartment in Sydney from Rent-A-Home. Our apartment was US$175 per night. If a hotel is more your style, the Holiday Inn Old Sydney is in a beautiful location on the edge of The Rocks. If you’re traveling with young children, and it’s important to be close to a park or playground, the Sheraton On The Park faces Hyde Park which has beautiful gardens and also a large grassy area to play in.
Eating
During our visit, the Australian Dollar was very strong against the U.S. Dollar making even small purchases appear overpriced. I found that eating breakfast at our apartment and packing a lunch helped to keep food costs down. It was easy to find a Woolworths supermarket in most city neighborhoods.
We did enjoy mid-morning coffee at Cafe Charlotte, a friendly local cafe in our ‘home’ neighborhood of Balmain. Brunch at the Bogey Hole on Bronte Beach was delicious. I was able to sneak some really excellent Thai food by my boys at Nood Noodle Bar on Darling St. but I think they preferred the Tuesday two-for-one pizza at The Riverview Hotel. Our favorite all around for treats was Adriano Zumbo.
Transportation
If you think you’ll be riding the bus or taking a ferry during your visit to Sydney, drop by the tourist information center in Darling Harbor. They’ll explain the many and varied ticket and pass options. With their help, I chose a Red weekly TravelPass. I was also able to take advantage of a family discount, when one fare paying adult travels with children, the first child travels for a child fare (half the full adult fare) and all other children travel free.
