Ecuador with children: Our experiences
We started our family world trip in Quito, Ecuador. We spent three weeks exploring this diverse country visiting Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and Vilcabamba. We traveled by bus and stayed in budget accommodation. The map below shows the route we traveled in Ecuador.
Ecuador is a very poor country which makes it an unbelievably cheap destination for family travel. On average, we spent $128 per day while in Ecuador (that’s for four of us, including all expenses for food, accommodation and activities).
Ecuador Accommodation
We stayed in budget accommodation (backpacker hostels) for most of our time in Ecuador – although I did rent a house on the beach near Montanita for less than $120/week using HomeAway.com. In Quito we stayed at the basic but comfortable Travellers Inn. The Huagra Corral hostel inside Cotopaxi National Park is a gem and the Izhcayluma Hostel in Vilcambamba is an out-of-the-way paradise worth the effort of the trip to get there.
Ecuador Highlights
Some high points of our time in Ecuador were taking silly photos at Mitad del Mundo, seeing a humpback whale breach right by our boat on the way to Isla de la Plata and exploring Podocarpus National Park on horseback.
