Vermont, located in the northeastern region of New England, offers the perfect authentic country experience. The “Green Mountain Sate” entices both outdoor enthusiasts and those looking for peaceful retreats.
Here are top 10 recommended activities in this charming state, which is an ideal vacation choice for the family:
1. Ski and snowboard in some of the largest skiing areas in New England. With heavy snows in winter, Vermont is a veritable winter wonderland for about 3 months.
2. Hike. For an easy hike, try the Robert Frost Trail which, you guessed right, commemorates the poetry of Robert Frost. This trail is handicap accessible. If you are up for a long-distance trail, you can do the aptly named Long Trail, the oldest in the U.S. which runs the length of the state.
3. Camp. Commune with nature and go camping. About 39 of Vermont’s State Parks offer excellent camping facilities, with options ranging from tent grounds to luxurious RV parks. The camper is rewarded with panoramic views, invigorating fresh air and an inspiring environment. Enjoy stargazing before you tuck yourself in for the evening. A favorite camping site is the Quechee State Park, where visitors can also take in awe-inspiring views of Quechee Gorge, the deepest gorge in Vermont, formed about 13,000 years ago by glacial activity.
4. Ride a bike. It’s been said that Vermont is the home for bike touring. It may be the best and most refreshing way to enjoy the beautiful foliage during Vermont’s colorful fall season. Idyllic farm villages, friendly locals and spectacular views await the rider.
5. Visit a farm. Vermont is an agricultural state and dairy farming is the primary source of income. Have a first-hand experience feeding the animals, milking the cows and gathering eggs. You can choose to spend the day for an overview of how cheese is made or stay overnight or longer for a more extensive working farm experience. This may yet be one of the best get-away vacations you will ever have. A visit to a farmer’s market is also highly recommended.
6. Fish. Vermont offers excellent trout, lake and ice fishing. Lessons are offered and may be a wonderful learning experience for the kids as well as a great family bonding activity.
7. Discover Vermont’s woodcraft industry. Go on a heritage tour, starting with a walk through of a working forest. Then visit a sawmill and wood factory. After which, observe craftsmen at a woodworking studio. Finally, view the final products in a gallery or showroom. Take home a souvenir or two!
8. Shop at the Vermont Country Store, famous for charming, hard-to-find brands from the past. A visit to the original store in Weston is like a blast from the past, while the outlet in Rockingham is set in a relaxing atmosphere with a mill and water wheel museum. Visitors can also have a picnic in its grounds. During winter, visitors can cut their own tree at their Christmas Tree Farm. This is a most unique shopping experience.
9. Visit Ben & Jerry’s Factory. Who doesn’t love ice cream? It should be fun not only for the kids but also for Mom and Dad to learn how everybody’s favorite flavor is made and have a taste of it, too. The factory offers tours which includes seeing cows in the pasture during summertime. Guests may also picnic in the wide grounds set amidst picturesque views.
10. Sample the nightlife at the Burlington Waterfront and Church Street. Even the nightlife in this rustic state can be relaxing. Take a leisurely walk along the waterfront along Lake Champlain and visit galleries and quaint shops. Dine in one of the restaurants which offer wonderful cuisine made from fresh produce while being entertained by live music.
Of course, you should not forget to have some locally produced maple syrup for which the state is famous.
